Mobutu renamed a number of cities in the Congo during his thirty-two year military dictatorship; including Kananga. The city's name comes from the Tshiluba word 'kanangayi' meaning a place for peace or love. It's an apt name as Kananga is historically known for being a gathering place for pre-colonial chiefs to settle disputes and make treaties.
